What's in Your Carry-on?

. Sunday, June 28, 2009

So, we love to travel. But, long flights and crowded airports can make traveling difficult. We just returned from Ireland and have about 12 hours to refill the travel size bottles, turn around and get to Louisville for the hospital commercial shoot. While I have these items at hand to make a list, here's what I always keep in my carry-on bag to keep me comfortable, sane, and as germ-free as possible:

laptop, charger and adapter
phone and charger
small camera
wallet and passport
a good book
earbuds
cash - US and Euro
vitamins - especially if you are working and can't take time off to be sick
mints
chocolate
trail mix
sanitizer - gel for hands and a pump spray for surfaces. don't sit down until you spray the seat arms and tray.
surgical mask - I always sit next to someone sneezing and hacking. And I really have worn that mask.
toothbrush and small tube of paste - after 8 hours on a plane, brushing your teeth is so refreshing
hand lotion and nail file
always carry medicines and jewelry in case luggage is lost or delayed

I also usually travel with a pashmina or wrap - it's better than the airline blankets and helps you look decent even if you are wrinkled and jet lagged. Slip-on shoes will help you move quickly through security.

And our best travel tip is probably on the management of laundry. I'd rather not do laundry while traveling, but I don't want to drag my dirty clothes along with me. So, we take old socks, underwear and t-shirts and throw them away as we travel. It's so easy, and don't we all have old socks and underwear that should be tossed?

During a layover, try to have a lot of water and choose better foods if possible. A turkey sandwich is so much better for your body than a burger and fries. Since a long flight is already dehydrating and tiring, try to have more nourishing foods.

Please share any travel tips you might have - anything to make travel easier helps make the vacation or the work experience better, doesn't it?
