Badwater

. Monday, July 13, 2009

The Badwater race started today. Charlie and Marshall are both participating in it, and I think they each have a few crew members that are familiar faces from the RA adventure.

I'm worried about both of them - especially Marshall. 3,100 miles is a really really long way to run and he's still recovering from that. The last time I saw him, he and Heather were retracing the route and completing a journal that he plans to publish. We were able to get together for dinner in Cleveland and he shared that he was still recovering from the overall wear and tear and still had some swelling in his foot. His more significant injuries during the run included plantar fasciitis and a longitudinal tear, not to mention he now has a lot of scar tissue that's adding to that swelling.

Charlie was battling a serious infection at the end of RA and vowed to start taking better care of himself. But this race is a brutal abuse to the healthiest and strongest, let alone these two guys who had serious physical issues only a matter of months ago. So, I hope and pray that they both stay safe.

To follow the race, check out www.badwater.com for what promises to be interesting coverage - webcams in Death Valley?!? I hope they can pull that off...
