Real People

. Saturday, August 8, 2009

Shooting real people can be tricky. This week we interviewed about 30 people for a doc project and were reminded about some tips that can help real people be comfortable in front of a camera.

1. build time into the schedule to allow the person to get comfortable on set. that's in addition to time for makeup and hair.
2. you, the director, and your crew set the tone for the person's approach to the set. if there is tension, they will feel it and absorb that stress. if there is respect, they will feel it. etc, etc.
3. carefully consider how much you want to reveal to each person - some will be more comfortable knowing what each crew member does and what all the equipment is, while some will be frightened by the same information.
4. your makeup artist is often the first crew member that they will get to know. if you have a real pro like Kylee Cook on set, you can trust that she will help put them at ease.
5. help each one have some fun with the experience. take still photos and email them back to your new friends. and thank you notes are always more fun with a photo enclosed.
