The Key

. Friday, May 15, 2009

So, yesterday I learned a very important lesson, the hard way...be sure to have extra keys. Well, sure, it sounds simple, but the simplest things can hold up an entire production. Like locking keys inside the car.

Yesterday I left my keys on the seat of the car. And they were obstructed from view by a camera bag.  Then, it was locked manually by another passenger who of course was smart to lock the car as we went to a restaurant for dinner. How could they have known? You couldn't even see the keys on the seat. I didn't realize the situation until dinner was over and we needed to get back on the road. So, it was 8pm and we still had some shots to get...and we were already looking at a 17-18 hour day. I feared a horrible delay. Fortunately, AAA was super fast and they got the door opened right away. Thanks to Beth's mom who gives her a AAA membership for Christmas every year.

So, tomorrow, I'm headed to the hardware store to make extra keys for absolutely every lock in our world. And from now on, we'll keep lanyards on the car keys when we're on set. And an extra set will be entrusted to another crew member until the end of the production. And, I'll sign up for roadside assistance, too! This is not a lesson I want to have to learn again.
